Intermediate hurlers carve out great win versus Bandon

On Saturday evening 24th August our intermediate hurlers travelled to Watergrasshill to take on Bandon. This was a game that needed to be won to give the lads a chance to be still in the hunt with one more game to play. We got a fabulous start with Captain James Keating making an impressive darting 50-yard run through the Bandon players. He picked his spot well and put the sliotar in the back of the net. Shortly afterwards we got a free which Peter put over the bar. Bandon followed this with 2 lovely points one from our puck out. They were pushing our defenders who stood up well under pressure. Luke gave a nice pass to James K who slotted it over and the following 3 points were scored by Bandon leaving nothing between the teams. James Mc gave a nice run to get his hands on the ball and put it nicely over the bar. There were periods of nice interplay but resulted in wides – the strong wind having an effect. Peter put one over the bar, followed by Dave K, who received a great pass from Pierce. Dave K received another lovely pass from Mikey W who was covering a lot of ground and he slotted this one over too. James Mc followed up with another point. James K made a mighty catch and was fouled coming out but the resultant free did not hit its mark. Bandon scored a 65 and in the last minute of the first half they managed to get one in the back of the net leaving the score Bandon 1-8 and Kildorrery 1-7. During the first half Kieran was brought on for Padraig, Kieran received a cut to the head and Dylan came on as a blood sub. Blood sub was reversed at the start of the second half, but Dylan remained on in place of Pierce.

It was all to play for and Kildorrery started well with James MC slotting one over, Peter from a 65 and Dylan getting on the scoresheet also. However, Bandon kept at it and received several frees plus points from play, resulting in a draw with 15 minutes left. We had some lovely passing movements out from our defenders and one of these resulted in a great pass from Dylan to Kieran who went for it and put it into the back of the net. A point from Dave K followed this and it looked like we had a little breathing room. However, Bandon did not lie down and our defenders plus Ian in goals were under constant pressure. Ian made a great save, and James O, Cormac, and Shane showed their experience and tenacity along with Cathal and Darren who marked their men tightly. David H was working extremely hard all over the pitch and was replaced in the last few minutes after getting injured by Sean W. James K was a constant presence, blocking and recycling the ball on numerous occasions. Mikey W was back to help and slotted a lovely point over, but Bandon kept coming scoring 3 points in a row to bring the deficit back to 2. Tensions were high and Luke put a lovely point over to keep the difference at 3 and hit a long-range effort which unfortunately hit the post. With only injury time left, Bandon were going for a goal, but our defence held strong resulting in a win which was a great relief to all. Final Score Kildorrery 2-14 Bandon 1-14. Well done to every panel member and the management team who worked hard to get this one over the line. They will play Blackrock in their last game on Saturday 7th September.

Junior Ladies

Our Junior ladies played Muintir Gabriels on Sunday 25th August in Kildorrery in the County Championship third round. The first score went Kildorrery’s way after a lovely run by Aine and she slotted in over the bar. After some lovely interplay and passing Anna put it over the bar. Gabriels came back at us but some nice tracking by Aine resulted in a turnover, and we went down the field for another point. There was some tenacious defending with Elaine making a great block, Judy difficult to get past in centre-back and giving some lovely passes, and Niamh solid in the full-back position. Aine intercepted a pass in the middle of the field and Anna finished the movement with a lovely point. Amelia read the ball from defence running out to catch a pass and this started a movement where Fiona put it over the bar. Niamh followed this up similarly intercepting a Gabriels pass, and Anna finished it off by kicking a lovely point. Niamh M and Aisling had great passing between the two of them with Aoife putting the ball over the bar. Emma had a good goal attempt which just went wide but she got her goal later after a great catch and pass by Fiona. Holly hit the back of the net after great work by Aine leaving the halftime score Kildorrery 2-8 and Muintir Gabriels 0-1.

In the second half the whole team continued to play well together and continued to put together some lovely passing movements and scores. Sally along with being involved in most attacks hit the scoresheet on several occasions along with Emma, Holly, Aoife, and Grace. Lauren made several turnovers in defence and gave great passes forward. The subs when introduced all played a significant role in this mighty win. Well done to the whole panel on a great team effort and all to the mentors on the sideline. Final score Kildorrery 5-14 Muintir Gabriels 0-1.
