Farewell Tommy

The club extends its heartfelt condolences this week to Nancy ,Mary Noreen & Noel & to the wider Dunne family on the sad passing of Tommy our past president last week. Tommy was a GAA legend. A hall of fame winner in 2011 Tommy gave his lifetime to GAA. In Kildorrery he hurled for Oldcastletown, farahy ,and Kildorrery from 1961 on . Tommy played the role of mentor to teams and acted as a board delegate. In his role as president of the club he was always very supportive and put the welfare of others and the club to the fore. He was a proud Kildorrery man. All activity in the pitch was suspended last Friday evening and Saturday and the flag flew at half-mast. Tommy was also famous for discovering the Mass Rock at Skahanagh off Canon Sheehan Loop.

Tommy counted many people as friends and his nature and disposition on life and friendships could be evidenced with all the mourners who came to pay their respects.

Tommy and the Dunne family found great comfort in his final days and along with himself , Nancy, Mary, Noreen and Noel and the extended Dunne family would like to acknowledge the massive effort that was made by everyone who helped in any way over the past number of weeks. Keeping Tommy at home for his removal was of great comfort to them but would not have been possible but for the help of so many. The empathy, support and help whether it was playing a bit of music, singing a song, bringing food to the house, catering in our home and the hall or just simply a kind word is a testament to the lovely community that we’re living in, something Tommy would be very proud of. And as he would say himself “Great credit to you all”. Thanks to all who helped with guards of honour and parking over the course of the few days.

Tommy’s garden wall ,have the engravings of the hurlers prayer. The following words can be read ‘’May the great referee when he calls my name, say you hurled like a man you played the game’’.

You certainly did Tommy.

Our club meeting last Monday marked his passing by regaling stories of him and the meeting closed with a moment of silence to remember him. Rest in peace dear Friend.

Intermediates lose to Gabriels

On Saturday 26th July, our intermediate footballers travelled to Ballygarvan to play Gabriel Rangers in their first outing of the championship. Our first score came from a free converted by Cathal Harrington with another from play from Sean Watson. We were struggling to get possession from the kickouts, but our opposition had several wides at this stage both from frees and play. James O Sullivan working hard scored a point and it was his great work again that resulted in Cathal punching the ball into the net.

Our opposition started to find their feet scoring a free and a series of quick passing movements resulted in them hitting the net and one over the bar. With 20 mins gone the sides were level at 1-3 each. Our possession from kickouts was giving us difficulty with Gabriels going up by a point. Luke showed lovely skill to put one over for us leaving it level at half time 1-4 each.

Gabriels started the second half well scoring 2 frees and one from play to leave them three up. Cathal scored a free for us and Darren made a great run with a shot at the goal which unfortunately was just wide. Gerry McCarthy replaced Timmy O Sullivan who had worked very hard. James O Sullivan’s hard work resulted in a free which Sean Watson converted. Our defence was working hard with Peter making a good intercept and Darren gaining a free which unfortunately we could not convert. James K got a lovely point at this stage with Will’s straight running resulting in a free which Sean W converted. James K made a great intercept from the Gabriels kickout and with some lovely passing Shane converted. Our opposition came back with 2 further points. Sean C had a shot on goal which was blocked, and Gabriel’s went down the pitch scoring a point leaving the score at this stage 1-10 to 1-9. After a hectic final few minute, where we missed a few scores Gabriels went down the pitch to score a last-minute goal resulting a final score line of 2-10 to 1-9. Not for us today but it was a great effort by the team and no doubt if this team believe in themselves, they will produce the results.

Team; Darren Caplice, Ian Butler, Conor Kent, Cathal O Sullivan, Sean Cunningham, Shane Fitzgerald (0-1), Timmy O Sullivan, Will Fouhy, James O’Sullivan (0-1), James Keating (0-1), Luke Keating (0-1), Darren McNamara, Cathal Harrington (1-2), Peter O Brien and Sean Watson (0-3).

Subs used Gerry McCarthy for Timmy O’Sullivan
