Intermediate Football League - Round 3

Glenville 2-08 — Kildorrery 0-11

Venue: Glenville • Conditions: Clear, cold evening under lights

A crisp evening in Glenville set the backdrop for Round Three of the Intermediate Football League, with the floodlights bright and the coffee hatch doing a lively trade. Unfortunately for Kildorrery, the night ultimately slipped away due to a handful of key factors—Glenville’s sharp transitional play, their dominance on our kickouts, and our own struggles with free‑taking accuracy.

Bright Start for Kildorrery

Kildorrery opened the contest with real intent, harrying Glenville at every turnover and breaking tackles with purpose. Early scores from Will Fouhy, a free from Luke, and an excellent long‑range point from Fitzy, who was operating strongly at midfield, had us well settled.

For the first ten minutes, it looked as though we were cruising.

Glenville Strike Back

But momentum shifted abruptly on 14 minutes. Glenville executed a superbly worked move from deep in their defence, moving the ball at pace before finishing clinically to the net. That goal changed the complexion of the half.

They tagged on two quick points and threatened even more, only for Tony to produce a brilliant save to keep us within touching distance.

A point from Kieran Hurley settled us again, but Glenville’s rapid handpassing surges repeatedly opened gaps, and their accuracy punished any lapse.

Kildorrery did close the half with good responses from Luke and another from Fitzy, but Glenville’s efficiency told. At the break they led 2-2 to 0-6, their ability to counter at speed proving the difference.

Second Half: Always Chasing

Glenville restarted strongly with an early point. We replied when Kieran Hurley converted a free—moved closer to goal for dissent under the new regulations.

Glenville’s Colm O’Leary, outstanding all evening at full forward, kicked two excellent points shortly after, stretching their lead. Hurley kept us in touch with another before nailing frees in the 50th and 51st minutes.

However, a few more frees during this spell drifted wide, moments that ultimately cost us dearly.

Despite introductions including Dylan and Seán Cunningham, we never truly found rhythm in the second half. While we did close the gap to a single point at one stage, Glenville won two of the final three scores to keep us at arm’s length.

Full-Time Thoughts

This was a game that felt within our reach. Effort was unquestioned, and at times our play was sharp and purposeful—but lapses in the final third, difficulties securing our own restarts, and those missed frees proved decisive.

Still, at this early stage of the league, there are valuable lessons in defeat.

With small improvements in composure and execution, nights like this can swing our way.
